Virtual Reality Meets Craftsmanship: The Reality Chair

Post Image

Swedish designers Gustav Winsth and Alexander Lervik have merged virtual reality (VR) technology with traditional craftsmanship to create the stunning Reality chair. Unveiled at the Stockholm Furniture Fair’s Älvsjö Gård exhibition, this chair was born from a series of virtual design sessions using VR goggles and the Gravity Sketch platform.

The chair’s design features bold, bulbous forms reminiscent of inflatables, showcasing the freedom VR offers in sculpting shapes. Winsth likened drawing in VR to working with clay, highlighting its effectiveness in creating complex surfaces. Unlike typical design processes, where physical constraints often influence early design decisions, Lervik and Winsth kept the design freeform, considering manufacturing later.

Crafted entirely from aluminium, the Reality chair required specialized metalworkers accustomed to shaping motorcycle gas tanks. The manual pressure turning process was used to create its unique shapes, emphasizing the collaboration’s focus on traditional craft techniques enabled by futuristic technology.

The chair’s production underscores the importance of skilled craftsmen in realizing intricate designs. Winsth noted that large-scale manufacturers couldn’t achieve such soft shapes, emphasizing the need for expert craftsmen who can create masterpieces from raw materials.

The result is a chair showcasing seamless craftsmanship, with weld lines only visible where the seat meets the legs and backrest. A red version, achieved with expert airbrush painting, added a vibrant touch to the collection.
