Sparking Change: Circular Design Dialogue

Post Image

Sparking Change, a collaborative installation by Roca and Mario Cucinella Architects, made a profound impact at Fuorisalone during Milan Design Week 2024. Comprising 1,200 3D-printed ceramic blocks, the installation stood as a vibrant, semi-circular backdrop at the Università degli Studi, symbolizing a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation in art design.

“This installation is evidence that technology and digital tools are no longer merely instruments for creating but also for stimulating new ideas,” remarked Mario Cucinella, highlighting the transformative role of technology in shaping art design.

Each block of the installation is individually crafted using a low-environmental impact process, combining virgin clay and recycled ceramics. The gradient and shape of the installation symbolize the firing process’s temperatures, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail in its art design.

Sparking Change’s curved structure creates inviting spaces for visitors to sit and engage, fostering meaningful conversations. Additionally, the installation’s design allows for easy disassembly, hinting at its potential for reuse in future art design installations.

The installation owes its existence to the Roca Group’s groundbreaking electric tunnel kiln, located in Austria. This kiln, offering decarbonization and automation capabilities, represents a significant shift in ceramics production, highlighting the potential for sustainable practices in art design.

Sparking Change serves as a testament to the positive environmental impact that innovative technology can have in art design. It exemplifies the power of art to catalyze conversations about circularity and decarbonization, inspiring change and pushing the boundaries of traditional art and design.
