Retro-Inspired Buvette Daphnée Restaurant

Post Image

Ivy Studio, a Montreal-based firm known for its innovative approach to interior design, has recently completed the interiors of Buvette Daphnée, a charming restaurant located in Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market district. Inspired by the colorful retro diners of Quebec, Ivy Studio has created a space that blends nostalgia with contemporary flair.

The restaurant, housed in a 1,500-square-foot space within an old industrial building, aims to showcase a blend of Quebecois and Ottawa cultures. This fusion is evident in the design, which features a warm palette of caramel, brown, and cream, accented with vibrant shades of blue and burnt orange. This combination creates a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere that pays homage to Montreal’s retro diners.

Custom interior design elements play a significant role in the restaurant’s aesthetic. Natural walnut millwork and exposed brickwork add warmth and texture to the space, while vintage dining chairs and banquettes upholstered in rich cognac and chocolate tones provide comfort and style. A custom-designed mosaic floor, featuring the restaurant’s main colors, ties the entire space together, creating a cohesive and visually striking look.

One of the standout features of Buvette Daphnée is its clever use of space. The restaurant is divided into two main areas: a cozy, intimate space with lower ceilings, and a loftier area with a 36-foot-long U-shaped bar and high-top counters. The use of black ceilings in the taller section helps to create a more intimate atmosphere, while cream-colored v-board paneling adds a sense of continuity between the two spaces.

Lighting also plays a crucial role in the restaurant’s design. Custom fixtures, including a 30-foot-long tubular piece by Montreal-based Hamster, add a contemporary touch, while frosted globe-shaped pendants recycled from Montreal’s 1960s street lamps create a nostalgic ambiance.

In conclusion, Ivy Studio’s work on Buvette Daphnée showcases their expertise in custom interior design and their ability to create spaces that are both visually striking and functional. The restaurant’s design pays homage to Quebec’s retro diners while offering a unique and inviting atmosphere that is sure to delight diners in Ottawa’s bustling food scene.
