Kelp Chair: Sustainable Seaweed Design

Post Image

Swedish design studio Interesting Times Gang is making waves with its innovative approach to furniture design. Their latest creation, the Kelp chair, takes sustainability to a whole new level by using seaweed as its primary material, a significant departure from the original chair made of recycled fishing nets and wood pulp.

The Kelp chair gets its name from the undulating lines of its form, inspired by ocean vegetation. This biomorphic design is not just aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally conscious, aligning with Interesting Times Gang’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Custom furniture design takes on a whole new meaning with the Kelp chair. Instead of traditional materials like wood or plastic, this chair is crafted from Nordic sugar kelp, a brown seaweed found in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. This innovative choice not only gives the chair a unique look but also contributes to a more sustainable future.

The use of seaweed in furniture design is more than just a stylistic choice. It reflects a growing trend towards bio-based materials that have a lower environmental impact. As Interesting Times Gang points out, macroalgae like kelp play a vital role in capturing carbon and producing oxygen, making them essential in the fight against climate change.

The Sugar Kelp chair is not just a statement piece; it’s a testament to the possibilities of sustainable design. The bioplastic blend used in its construction is 3D printed, showcasing the potential for cutting-edge technology to intersect with eco-friendly materials.

To complete the eco-conscious package, the chair can be paired with a cushion made from Keel Labs’s seaweed-based Kelsun fibre and kelp biofoam from Norwegian start-up Agoprene. These materials ensure that the chair is not only comfortable but also fully biodegradable at the end of its life cycle.

Custom furniture design is evolving, and Interesting Times Gang is at the forefront of this revolution. By embracing seaweed as a material for their Kelp chair, they are setting a new standard for sustainable design practices. The Kelp chair is not just furniture; it’s a symbol of innovation and environmental stewardship.
