HB-AS Unveils Berea Sandstone Lamps at NYCxDESIGN

At New York Design Week (NYCxDESIGN) 2024, minimalist design dealer and publication Leibal presents a stunning collaboration with San Francisco-based designers Hank Beyer and Alex Sizemore. Known collectively as HB-AS, this multidisciplinary studio specializes in creating furniture, products, and sculptures. Their latest work, the Berea Sandstone Lamps, showcases their unique approach to design and has garnered significant attention in furniture trends news.

The Berea Sandstone Lamps originate from an Ohio quarry, where Beyer and Sizemore first discovered the material in 2017 while they were industrial design students at the University of Cincinnati. They spent the summer documenting the operations of a family-owned quarry along the Berea sandstone formation in Northeastern Ohio. During this time, they salvaged several discarded sandstone offcuts, transforming these pieces into evocative lamps instead of allowing them to be ground into aggregate. This project caught the eye of Leibal founder Leo Lei, who published their initial collection.

Fast forward to 2024, and Leibal is set to debut an exclusive, 11-piece collection of HB-AS’s Berea sandstone lamps. After revisiting the quarry this past winter, Beyer and Sizemore spent a week on-site salvaging a new collection of fragments. These lamps are crafted from sandstone that has been shaped over 350 million years, with each piece bearing unique marks and patterns from mineral deposits such as clay, iron, aluminum, and magnesium. These natural details are akin to the rings of a tree, telling a story of time and geological processes.

In addition to the ancient formations, the lamps also reflect modern industrial techniques. The processes of blasting, cutting, coring, and grinding sandstone can sometimes render the stone unusable for commercial purposes. However, HB-AS has embraced these imperfections, creating lamps that are collages of minimally modified parts. Each lamp celebrates the unique origins of its sandstone piece, showcasing the beauty in both the ancient and modern aspects of the material.

furniture trends news

The Berea Sandstone Lamps will be displayed during NYCxDESIGN 2024 at 2 Rivington St, New York, NY, from May 17th to 19th. This exhibition not only highlights the creative vision of HB-AS but also emphasizes the growing trend of using natural and salvaged materials in contemporary design. The collection aligns with current furniture trends news, where sustainability and the celebration of natural materials are increasingly in focus.

For those unable to attend in person, the collection can be explored online through Leibal’s website. This collaboration between HB-AS and Leibal underscores the importance of innovative design and the potential of repurposing materials to create beautiful, functional art. The Berea Sandstone Lamps stand as a testament to the power of creative collaboration and the enduring allure of natural materials in modern design.
