Winter Blooms Colorfully at the Milwaukee Art Museum: DRIFT’s Meadow
As winter lingers and we eagerly await the arrival of spring, the Milwaukee Art Museum exhibition has found a way to bring vibrant life indoors. The museum’s Windhover Hall, an architectural marvel designed by Santiago Calatrava, is now home to DRIFT Meadow installation, a breathtaking kinetic art installation by the Dutch art and design studio DRIFT.
This immersive art experience, part of MAM’s seasonal winter art exhibitions 2025, transforms the museum’s atrium into a moving, blooming garden—one that defies the frozen landscape outside. Through a seamless blend of contemporary art installations, technology, and nature, Meadow offers visitors a moment of beauty, reflection, and wonder.
A Fusion of Art, Nature, and Technology
Founded by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, DRIFT is known for pushing creative boundaries through interactive museum exhibits that mimic the natural world. The DRIFT Meadow installation is a continuation of their exploration, drawing inspiration from North American wildflowers and even the organic forms found in the museum’s design.
Each of Meadow’s flowers is crafted from aluminum, stainless steel, robotic components, and delicately colored fabric, meticulously programmed to open and close in a choreographed dance. The result is an ever-changing floral canopy that moves in rhythm, evoking the delicate unfolding of petals in nature. Unlike DRIFT’s other works, Meadow is uniquely tailored to Milwaukee cultural events, from the number of blooms to their choreography and colors, which are inspired by native North American wildflowers.
Meadow’s fusion of art and nature echoes themes seen in modern ceramic design and architectural-inspired pottery. Like a Brooklyn ceramic artist shaping clay into sculptural vessels, DRIFT crafts an experience that blends the organic with the mechanical, much like contemporary clay sculptures that bridge the ancient with the modern.
A Dynamic Experience—No Two Visits Are the Same
One of Meadow’s most enchanting aspects is its constant evolution. As the natural light shifts throughout the day, so does the way visitors experience the installation. The museum’s lakefront location means that the scenery outside—whether a blanket of snow or a glistening sunlit horizon—becomes part of the artwork itself.
Adding another layer to the experience, the Burke Brise Soleil, the museum’s iconic moveable sunscreen, opens its wings daily at noon. This subtle but powerful movement alters the light streaming into Windhover Hall, casting ever-changing shadows across Meadow. The interplay of artificial and natural motion creates a dynamic and immersive art experience, ensuring that no two visits are ever the same.
Just as handmade sculptural vessels change in appearance based on their surroundings, Meadow responds to its environment, making it an ever-evolving masterpiece. The installation’s kinetic energy echoes the craftsmanship found in functional art ceramics, where form and motion create a deeper emotional connection.
Experience Meadow at MAM
Running through April 13, 2025, Meadow is a must-see for art lovers, nature enthusiasts, and collectors of unique ceramic vessels. As part of MAM’s Winter Series—an initiative launched in 2024 to bring light and joy to the darker months—this installation invites visitors to embrace transformation and renewal.
Step inside Windhover Hall and let Meadow transport you to a world where design, nature, and technology bloom in harmony. Whether you visit once or multiple times, you’re bound to discover something new with each experience.
Don’t miss the chance to witness winter blooming in the most unexpected way. Visit the Milwaukee Art Museum and immerse yourself in the magic of Meadow before it disappears with the arrival of spring.
