The Balera Collection: Where the Light Lives in the Tiles

Post Image

Ceramic lighting has once again established itself as an innovator – first there were tiles that became hooks and lamps, now in the Balera Collection, lighting itself has found a new place in a tile.

The Balera Collection, a collaboration with STUDIOTAMAT, Arianna De Luca, and Ninefifty, redefines the potential of ceramic design. Here, lighting is not added on, it is embedded into the surface, creating luminous sculptural wall coverings. From glaze to glow, the Balera Collection is a blur between craft and technology, design and art.

Lighting Meets Ceramic: A New Chapter in OFFTAMAT

This partnership is part of ‘OFFTAMAT,’ an experimental branch of STUDIOTAMAT, where creativity is prioritized and borders blur. The platform honors limited-edition creations that fuse functionality and expression, emphasizing that design is an exploration of everyday objects, including decorative or wall lamps, that are elevated to an experiential level of creativity.

For Balera, the studio partnered with Arianna De Luca, the Abruzzo-born designer known for her expressive ceramic forms and modern color sensibilities, alongside Ninefifty, the historic Caltagirone-based manufacturer preserving Italy’s ceramic heritage. Together, they’ve crafted a collection that bridges tradition with innovation — bringing modern lights to life through craftsmanship.

The Spark: A 20×20 cm Beginning

It all began with a simple idea — and a precise constraint.

“We asked Arianna to design a wall lamp starting from a measurement of 20×20 cm,” explains Matteo Soddu of STUDIOTAMAT. “We wanted to explore surface plasticity and pair the lamp with graphic marks inspired by its curves — creating a modular language that could live in tiles.”

From that single square, the Balera wall light system was born — a poetic fusion of light fixtures and ceramics, where illumination becomes part of the architecture.

Modular Poetry in Light and Form

Each tile, measuring 20×20 cm, fits into a rhythmic grid of lines, curves, and glossy glazes. The lamp placed on the wall becomes one with the surface — its soft light enhances every relief and brushstroke.

This modular format offers an infinite series of compositions: tiles that illuminate, lamps that melt into pattern, and walls that pulse with light. This is an extraordinary modern lighting fixture that combines architecture and sculpture in one.

Color as Conversation

For Arianna De Luca, color is emotion. “We worked to create a shared chromatic language,” she explains. “It was about blending my palette with Ninefifty’s — distinct yet harmonious.”

Balera’s hues span sunbaked neutrals, terracotta pinks, and deep Mediterranean blues. Each ceramic wall sconce reacts uniquely to light — warming under sunlight and glowing softly by night. It’s a study in how light fixtures can shape atmosphere, mood, and storytelling.

A Contemporary Study in Light, Craft, and Architecture

Balera is more than a lamp; it’s a philosophy of design where light lives inside the wall, not above it. It bridges architecture, craft, and technology, giving tiles a new luminous identity.

STUDIOTAMAT, Arianna De Luca, and Ninefifty have integrated light into ceramic design to create a collection that is both timeless and forward-thinking. The designs are tactile yet ethereal; handcrafted yet utilitarian in their futuristic outlook.
