Sungai Design: Transforming Bali’s Plastic
In the world of design, creativity often meets innovation to address pressing environmental challenges. One such example is the collaboration between Sungai Watch and Sungai Design, where Bali’s plastic pollution problem is being tackled head-on. Bali, known for its picturesque landscapes, faces a significant issue with plastic waste, producing 1.6 million tons annually.
Sungai Watch, a nonprofit organization, takes the lead in cleaning up Bali’s waterways by installing barriers to trap pollution. Since its inception in 2020, Sungai Watch has removed nearly 1,900 tons of plastic from the island’s rivers. The collected plastic is then cleaned, sorted, and transformed into modern loungers by Sungai Design.
Using a process that involves shredding and pressing the plastic waste into large panels, Sungai Design creates stylish and functional furniture. CNC machines cut parametric components that are assembled into modern chairs, with offcuts recycled into other products. Each chair is estimated to recycle around 30 kilograms of plastic, contributing significantly to reducing environmental impact.
This initiative not only helps mitigate Bali’s plastic problem but also creates awareness about the importance of recycling and sustainable practices. Sungai Design’s furniture showcases the potential of upcycling, demonstrating that waste can be transformed into beautiful and functional pieces for custom interior design.
Custom interior design projects can benefit greatly from sustainable practices like those demonstrated by Sungai Watch and Sungai Design. By incorporating recycled materials into their designs, interior designers can create unique and eco-friendly spaces. These efforts not only contribute to a greener environment but also inspire others to adopt similar practices in their designs.
As the world continues to grapple with environmental challenges, initiatives like Sungai Watch and Sungai Design serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that innovative solutions can be found to address pressing issues. Through creativity and collaboration, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
