Néophore: Döppel Studio’s Fusion of Ancient Amphorae and Neon Illumination
Paris-based Döppel Studio, founded by designers Lionel Dinis Salazar and Jonathan Omar, has unveiled “Néophore,” a collection that reimagines ancient Greek amphorae through a contemporary lens. These terracotta vessels are uniquely intersected by looping, handle-like tubes of glowing neon, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
Revitalizing Ancient Forms
In ancient Greece, amphorae were utilitarian vessels used to transport and store liquids and grains. Döppel Studio draws inspiration from these millennia-old forms, transforming them into modern sculptures that serve as both art pieces and functional lamps. The integration of neon elements introduces a playful yet sophisticated dialogue between form and function, challenging traditional perceptions of pottery and lighting.
Collaborative Craftsmanship
To achieve the distinctive reflective enamel that reacts dynamically under neon light, Döppel Studio collaborated with ceramicist Aliénor Martineau. Specializing in mineral-based natural glazes, Martineau customized an enamel that enhances the visual impact of the neon illumination, adding depth and complexity to each piece.
Exhibition at ToolsGalerie
The “Néophore” collection was showcased at ToolsGalerie in Paris from November 14, 2024, to January 11, 2025. This exhibition offered art enthusiasts an opportunity to explore the seamless fusion of ancient craftsmanship and contemporary design.
