KARIM+ELIAS’ Desert Drop Series Evokes the Layered Beauty of the Landscape

Post Image

At the intersection of heritage and innovation, design duo KARIM+ELIAS continue to sculpt stories from sand. Their latest pieces, part of the ongoing Desert Drop series, were recently unveiled at the inaugural Downtown Design Riyadh, marking a poetic continuation of their tactile exploration of rammed earth as both material and message.

Ancient Technique, Contemporary Form

Building on their acclaimed debut at Downtown Design Dubai, the duo’s newest additions — a set of wall-mounted lamps and sculptural stem vases — deepen their dialogue with the desert. These works reinterpret ancient construction techniques, specifically rammed earth, through a refined, modern lens.

The lamps seamlessly fuse sedimentary earth with hand-blown glass, creating wall pieces that glow with quiet elegance. A softly glowing bulb is housed within a recessed, glass shade, which nestles into a body made of compacted earth. The effect is both grounding and ethereal — a literal and figurative illumination of natural elements.

Alongside the lamps, sculptural vases bring further texture and depth. Designed for small floral arrangements, the vessels feature an earthy, grounded base that holds a glass chamber for stems, marrying form and function in a balanced, meditative way.

Sand as Storytelling

For KARIM+ELIAS, the desert isn’t just a backdrop — it’s a narrator. Their work treats sand as a narrative material, rich with regional memory and cultural identity. Every layer of rammed earth echoes geological history, while the gentle curves and striations reflect the organic forms found in dunes, cliffs, and canyon walls.

“Our aim is to revive and evolve these ancient methods,” the designers share, “and to bring their sensorial tactility into the home through objects that are both functional and poetic.”

Collectible Objects That Ground and Glow

Beyond aesthetics, the Desert Drop series invites reflection — on place, on history, on the materials beneath our feet. These collectible pieces aren’t just decor; they’re conversations with the landscape, designed to bring warmth, grounding, and narrative into contemporary interiors.

Whether softly illuminating a hallway or holding a single desert bloom, each object speaks to a deeper story — one that connects us to craft traditions of the past while pointing toward the future of sustainable, expressive design.

With Desert Drop, KARIM+ELIAS continue their journey of transforming earth into art — and honoring the layers, textures, and time that shape our world.
