John Pawson’s Minimalist Furniture for Dinesen

In a celebration of over three decades of collaboration, British architectural designer John Pawson and Denmark’s leading manufacturer of handcrafted wooden flooring, Dinesen, have introduced the Pawson Furniture Collection. This made-to-order collection is a testament to the enduring relationship and shared vision that began in 1992, marked by projects ranging from private homes to museums and chapels.

The origins of the Pawson Furniture Collection can be traced back to when Pawson designed his home in Notting Hill, London. Using Dinesen’s Douglas fir for the flooring, he laid the planks uncut in one single piece, subsequently using wood of a corresponding width to create a table and stools. This initial project blossomed into a long-lasting friendship and business partnership, culminating in the creation of this minimalist furniture line.

The collection is based on the dimensions of Dinesen’s floorboards, transformed into the Dining Series and Lounge Series. The custom products reflect the Danish word “umage,” meaning to go beyond what is expected. This ethos is evident in the meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design of each piece.

The Dining Series, first drawn by Pawson in 1992, includes a dining table, bench, and stool. Updated with a shadow gap detail, the series combines Douglas fir planks with Dinesen Oak inserts. The result is a blend of simplicity and elegance, where the wood’s natural beauty takes center stage. These pieces exemplify current furniture trends, focusing on sustainability and timeless design.

The Lounge Series features a solid Douglas wood lounge chair, coffee table, sofa, and daybed. Skilled cabinet makers in Denmark, local to Dinesen, construct the wooden frames and upholster them with Kvadrat textiles. The exposed wood boards on the sides of the sofa and lounge chair add a layer of texture and warmth, while the cushions provide comfort. The daybed and coffee table, shorter versions of the dining table, complete the series, making it versatile for various architectural updates in both commercial and residential spaces.

Pawson’s minimalist approach is evident in every piece. “When I look at this new furniture collection for Dinesen, I see the essence of the thinking that has shaped my work since the beginning,” Pawson explains. “Everything about these pieces is pared back to the logic and poetry of the wood.”

This collaboration is a perfect example of how a multidisciplinary design studio can create custom products that blend form and function seamlessly. Thomas Dinesen, the fourth generation at Dinesen, notes, “John Pawson has in many ways changed our relationship with the ‘plank’ from a restoration material for historic buildings to a design element in modern architecture.
